featuring eggplants

#teenvogue shirt: liz clairborne // jeans c.o chiara fashion // sneakers: c.o. bc footwear

and now a brief break from our regularly scheduled punk-rockness for an old navy ad

Sometimes I surprise even myself with my ability to dress (on the surface)
like an average friendly + pleasant member of society. There's little giveaways everywhere though.

My bracelet still says "you can't sit with us",
my jeans are moto,
and my sneakers are leopard print pony hair.

You can put the Justina in fall commercial wear,
but it's still Justina.

Or something,
you really shouldn't expect much of my analogy remixes at this point.

This is also the last outfit you will see from 16 year old Justina,
because I will be 17 year old Justina in two days,
and everything is going to change.

I'm just kidding, I don't even know what "everything" is.

I do know that it rained for the first time in forever today for like 2.5 seconds,
and that basically means it's now winter in California. We all need  to break out our three quarter sleeves, because it's about to be a chilly 79 degrees for the next three months.
You think I'm kidding but I'm not
 x

stay punk barbie

top: barbie for forever 21 // pants: motel rocks // backpack: c.o. sunny dushanka

So it wasn't until AFTER we wrapped up shooting this outfit that we noticed that every single full length photo was ludicrously crooked, therefore

 DETAIL POST.

just imagine my docs at the end of my legs and you have the picture anyway

It will never not be time for these pants.
They are wonderful and also great and if they ever wreck I shall probably cry for ages.
crying is punk rock too ok

Combined with my docs they also have a curious effect of making people step out of my way.
Probably mainly because they're worried about getting kicked in the shins,
I can't always control my shoes.

They're also a fun base for basic pieces, like my new Barbie/Perfect t-shirt from the new Barbie x Forever 21 collection. I'm not big on crop tops,
but this one works perfectly with all my high waisted pants.

By the way, people keep feeling the need to tell me boys don't like highwaisted pants??? Why do people think this??? Why should my pants care if boys don't like them??? Unclear.

What I am very clear on is how insanely genius the Milan collections were this season.
I don't usually do collection posts but I might have to make an exception for Moschino.

It's a good time to be a Barbie girl in fashion.

Justina

september tunes

probably no one noticed that I didn't do one of these last month right

oh

This months playlist has no flow whatsoever,
and I quite like it.
Each of the songs comes with such a different energy and ~eMoTioN~

Here's some various thoughts I had while choosing songs:

*"Don't" is what happens when you have Ed Sheeran sing a song
written by Taylor Swift (probably) and audio directed by Pharell (probably)

*Mac Miller + Hoodie Allen = cool older brother rap.

*Sam Smith needs to go on tour with Adele. Please. Take my money.

*I WANT A HOUSE IN BUDAPEST GEORGE EZRA

*How good is B.o.B.? So good.
(why does no one ever talk about B.o.B??)

*And in their off time, ONEREPUBLIC are definitely pyros. Good song though.

* I have no idea who they are but I like this song. Good call Pandora.
(Vance Joy)

Basically it all comes down to avoiding songs with Ariana Grande
which is basically impossible.

interview // justina x nolan

CR: Annette Brown/FOX

(Disclaim: this show does deal with some serious stuff,
and if it's not your jam,
feel free to read this post I wrote about tracksuits when I was 13.)

At the TCA's, I saw a bald head, and freaked out
It was Charlie Rowe, and with him was Nolan Sotillo.

They, along with Ciara Bravo, (who I had taken some pretty solid selfies with earlier in the evening),
were there to promote their new FOX show Red Band Society. After I bully-er, convinced Charlie to refollow me on twitter, we managed to get in a good chat about the show.

Then I got to continue that with Nolan, who plays Jordi, one of the main characters.

Justina:So tell me about Jordi Palacios.
Well actually, first tell me if I'm pronouncing that properly.

Nolan: It's Jor-di Pa-LA-ci-os, or if you're saying it in Spanish it's a little different.

Okay, I will change that, since I think I've been spelling it wrong this whole time.
Hahahah, well, Jordi is American born, but after his mom dies, and having never really known his dad, he goes to live with his Abuela in Mexico. He's then diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, which is a cancerous bone tumor. His personality is really determined and motivated, which causes him to, you know, make the best of his situation. He does some research and finds the best doctor he can, to get treatment on his leg and ultimately live a normal life.

That's obviously a lot of backround on a character. Was there anything specific you had to do to get into that mindset? Did you have to learn Spanish?

Well I'm actually of Cuban- and Spanish- decent, so I actually already did speak Spanish, but I think for the most part, it was a matter of me really wanting to get the story straight, in my head. So I asked a lot of questions, especially from the writers, who could tell me a lot about Jordi's past, and I could then visualize that. I wanted to fill out every detail, and have a clear vision of who he is in my mind.

This show obviously deals with some Really Heavy Subject Matter. Was a specific part of that particularly grueling for you?

Well, I think the most obvious answer would be that I can't relate, myself, to having cancer. But I did have the opportunity to meet some kids who were going through some really difficult situations in different hospitals on the Red Band Tour. I think that provided me with the grounds of that seriousness that it's tempting to play when there's cancer involved, because of the heaviness of it, but kids just want to be kids. Even if you're in a tough situation, you're going to deal with it, and make the best of your situation.

I remember you guys telling me at the TCA's that Red Band Society isn't about the hospital,
it's about the kids.

Yeah, exactly. It's just like any other show, it's about the people in it, whether it takes place in a police station, or in a school. This happens to take place in a hospital.

Well you may have just covered it, but if there was one thing you'd want people to know about this show that may not be immediately obvious to them, what would it be?

Red Band Society is not..yeah, Red Band Society is not a show about kids in their hospital beds. It's about teenagers growing up, and going through the normal strife of being a misunderstood teenager. Our backdrop just happens to be this hospital.

The hospital isn't the point.

I mean obviously there's a reason we're there, because we're sick, and that's part of who we are, so that comes up. But it's doesn't matter where you are, as a teenager you're always going to want to live life and experience everything you can. I think that's what everyone's doing. At least in my experience.

I think you're right. Now that the hard-hitting journalism questions are out of the way, lets talk some lighter stuff. What's your favorite part of the pilot episode?

I think my favorite part is when Leo (Charlie Rowe) talks to Charlie (Griffin Gluck)
and gives him his red band.

So that's the "Symbolic Moment".
It's a really touching scene, and he says this simple line to him, but it's emotional, and Charlie being the incredibly talented actor that he is makes it all the better. That's definitely my favorite.

If you could play any other character on the show, who would it be?
If I could play any other....hmm. A doctor? That'd be cool.
Or is it Dash? Maybe Dash, because Dash is badass.

That is true. That is very true.

That's a hard one. Actually I think I'm going to go with Dr. McAndrews,  just because he's - just from an actor's perspective - he's torn between two sides, and Dave does it so amazingly, I just want to see if I can do that.

In nearly the same thought, the show is often described as "The Breakfast Club, set in a hospital". If you could be any Breakfast Club character, who would you choose?

Man, that's a tough one. Is it like...who I would be, or who I think it'd be fun to play?

Pick either. There's a wide open question right there.

Hmmmm *sounds of deep thinking* I think it's - is it Brian? I could be completely off. In a class, I actually did a scene from The Breakfast Club, and I can't remember what it is, but it was funny.

Hahahaha, okay, hang on, I have a list here, and Brian is The Brain.

Exactly! Brian.

You were super close.

Haha, yeah, that's who I'd want to play.

Speaking of your cast (well I was thinking about them), the premise of the show is you guys sort of coming together and becoming a family, and as a cast, you seem to have a lot of fun together. What do you guys do in your "time off"?

I think for me, well, for the guys, we just play video games. But then you know, when the girls are involved, we try to, you know, we play board games and go to concerts and stuff, but that's about the extent of what we do for fun. Otherwise we're just eating.

Dude, food. I mean, last night when I was writing these questions for you,
the entire first draft involved food.

Haha, really?

Indeed. Oh, and now here's a good one: what's your favorite moment from filming/hanging out on set, from..whenever. Any point, as long as it doesn't spoil anything.

Alright, well the most recent one was actually yesterday, and it was all thanks to little Griffin.  I guess Dave and Rebecca were on set shooting, along with Octavia. Charlie, Zoe,  Dave's wife, and I were all playing a board game in Dave's dressing room. All of a sudden, the trash can, the little small one in the hallway outside the door, just falls over. We're like "What? What was that?" and I think it was Charlie who walked over, and right when he gets to the doorframe, Griffin SCREAMS and jumps out at him. For some reason it was just ridiculously funny.

It's always the unexpected that's gonna get you. In your other life, besides RBS, you're pretty involved in music. If you were going to make a three song playlist to sum up the show, emotions, characters, anything, what would you put on it?

Ummmmmm. Trying to think, trying to think...I feel like I don't even know three songs now. Okay, here goes:

1. Free Falling - John Mayer
2. Stay With Me - Sam Smith
3....what's a cool up beat song?

I don't know, I can't think of a single song.

I know, all I can think of right now is like, food.

That might be slightly my fault.

A little. Joking. Okay, I think our like, theme song, should be "Come on Eileen". It doesn't really fit the show, but that's what we listen to when we're getting pumped up, so I'm gonna go with it.
Charlie and I jam out to that song.

Got it. Playlist achieved. Okay, Lightning round questions, here we go.
Instagram or twitter?

Good man. What's your favorite food?

Pizza! Right now.

Do you have a different favorite food when you're filming?

Whatever my favorite food is at the moment.

Favorite song to get ready to in the morning?
..........I don't listen to music when I get dressed.

Wait, really?

Yeah, that's like...distracting. It would take me forever to get dressed!

You know, that would explain a lot about how long it takes me to get ready in the morning.
Okay, last one: You said in an interview once that you would shave your hair off like Charlie did. Do you still stand by that?

Yeah! I was supposed to actually, but they changed it.

Was that disappointing?

It's wasn't disappointing, I mean, I don't mind my hair, but you know, you gotta worry about it!
If you shave it, you don't have to.

Trust me, I feel that more that you could possibly know. But I feel like a lot of your fans would be really sad if you shaved off your hair.

Come on, I promise it'd still be me guys!

Hahah I suppose that is true. Parting words: is there anything else you'd like everyone to know about you, your show, your cast, food? It's wide open for you.

I guess..in the first two episodes, I get to play two songs that I wrote, so I'm going to try to release those soon, not by the first week, but maybe by like the third or fourth week of the show. As far as Red Band Society goes, I'm just really excited for everyone to see it. I think we're doing #RedBandSociety, and we're going to livetweet the premiere..you should live tweet with us.

Already planning on it.

Red Band Society premieres this Wednesday, September 17th at 9pm PT/ET on FOX. You can follow the show on twitter at @RedBandSociety, and Nolan at @Nolan_Sotillo.

stomping ground

denim c.o dstld | shirt: ralph lauren | boots: dr martens via asos | backpack c.o sunny dushanka
nail varnish: claires | flannel: vintage

and yet another outfit in a series of me trying to prove my soft grunge punk rock-ness to my mum

I could write a whole blog post just about these dstld. jeans and my love for them.

If fact, I will. So for now I will just tell you that I have managed to successfully wear them every day for a week and see no reason to stop now. They're actually overdyed indigo, not black,
but that's for another post.

I've discovered that flannels are a much better alternative to hoodies
and don't make me look like a complete hobo.
At least that's what I like to think, let me have my hopes okay

The only reason I have managed to pull off wearing this outfit in what is basically still the middle of summer here is because everyone seems to think they can stave off fall by BLASTING their air conditioning. It'll be 90 outside and -984375438 inside. Winter is coming.

Also, I know I have the most freakishly long fingers ever, but the perk of that is having really long nails as well which I can paint any color I so choose,
even if it horrifies my grandmother.

ach justiniiiii

instant summer with fujifilm

all photos taken with an instax mini 8 on instax film, courtesy of fujifilm

wow that's a lot of photos,
and this is just a summer-y summary

hahaha a summer-y summary
see what I did there

At the beginning of summer,
I decided to consciously document the months in Instax photos.

So I packed up my little camera and took it on all of my adventures.
You'd be surprised how heavy that thing gets after a couple hour.

These are just a few of the hundreds of photos I took, each a special little moment that I get to keep forever. I keep them all up on my wall and love that by looking at them, I can automatically remember exactly who I was with, what we were talking about,
and what I was eating.

From the top:

a. The California State Fair.
I ate way too many Bavarian Almonds, talked about 4-H to every human who walked by me, learned how to properly program a robot to walk the thin line, and then conquered my fear of Poppy The Bear (State Fair Mascot) and HUGGED him.

b. Paul Smith
I can't get over this building. It's so pink. The walls are so massive. Sallie took this photo of me taking photos of it.

c. The Tower Theatre.
You know the story behind this one. My mum and I got yelled at for taking it but 500% worth it.

d. Alfreds Coffee.
I love this place so much and it was made even better by the company of my main bae Sallie. My drink order hasn't changed.

e. Portos' Cafe,
with the aforementioned bae.
GET THE PINA COLADA SMOOTHIE. Just do it. Thank me later.
Also saw, selfied, and had a lovely conversation regarding overalls
and red carpets with Greer Grammer.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!

f. The Santa Cruz Boardwalk
People pile on the sidewalk with my favorites at the 2014 California 4-H State Leadership conference at approx. 11pm. We're the best dressed hobos in town.

g. Beverly Hills.
(duh) With all my trips to LA, I had never seen this iconic sign. It was everything I wanted it to be, and I met two of the most glammed out humans I have ever see, who were wonderfully French.

h. The Griffiths Observatory
Not really the best place to take chances with gravity, but what a beautiful view. This is the very best place in LA to explore European languages, because there are more Europeans there than in Europe.

i. Beverly Hills.
Again. PALM TREES. PALM TREES EVERYWHERE.

 j.  Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
Believe it or not, this was my first time ever, and I decided to do everything. I got on the sketchiest rollercoaster I saw (cried off my eyeliner - totally worth it), ate bavarian almonds again (still freakishly good, still not a great idea), nearly lost a Doc on the chair lift,
and laser tagged the people I love.

Summer is nearly done
and winter is coming
(or whatever version of it we get in california)
but thankfully, Instax photos aren't limited to sunshine.

How do you capture your moments?

x Justina

ps. speaking of capturing moments:
I'M GOING TO INSTAGRAM TODAY TO SEE THE GREAT AND WONDERFUL LIZ.
Today as in Monday.
If it is not Monday,
you are late.

magic in the movies

shirt : levis mens // backpack c.o. sunny dushanka // sunnies c.o zero uv // dr. martens : asos

You know when an outfit just happens and it works perfectly?
 That's what happened here.

Now on a note that seems unrelated but I promise works into the big picture:
 I LOVE MOVIES.

There's something magical about sitting in a dark theater, watching a whole other world play out. Where I live, there's no better place to do that than the Tower Theatre.
It's old, smells funny like an Old Thing, and is absolutely beautiful.

It's also suuuuuper hipster,
so the chance of them playing a film that you've actually heard of is practically non-existent.
They specialize in movies you didn't know existed,
but once you do, you end up thinking about for days.
This was the case with me + Magic in The Moonlight, the film I wore this outfit to go see.

SEE I TOLD YOU IT TIED IN.

I'm not going to tell you about the movie except to say
that it is gorgeous, brilliantly done, and Emma Stone
Watch the trailer ten times, then go see the movie a couple more.

This outfit made me feel so cool
Between the backpack and my white cat-eyes,
 I was 2 legit 2 quit.

Unfortunately,
there was no one in the theatre besides my mum who was under the age of eighty to appreciate it,
but the old women definitely muttered about my docs,
so there's that.

Everyone knows one of my favorite style tips is to shop in the men's section,
and this is proof that it pays off.  I actually bought this shirt to give Nusardel as a birthday gift.

 Two years ago.

But he understands making sacrifices for a good outfit.

 I hope.

 xx
Justina
